{"id":"CVE-2026-98058","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"bpf: Mark syscall helpers as sleepable","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nbpf: Mark syscall helpers as sleepable\n\nbpf_sys_bpf() executes the bpf(2) syscall body, which can take mutexes,\nallocate with GFP_KERNEL, and wait for an RCU grace period.\nbpf_sys_close() reaches close_fd() and filp_close(), which can sleep as\nwell.\n\nBoth helpers are limited to BPF_PROG_TYPE_SYSCALL, whose main program is\nsleepable. That does not make every callback sleepable: a syscall program\ncan register a bpf_timer callback, and the verifier checks that callback\nin a non-sleepable context while retaining the syscall helper set.\n\nWithout .might_sleep on the prototypes, such a callback can invoke\nbpf_sys_bpf() from hrtimer softirq context and trigger a\nscheduling-while-atomic failure. bpf_sys_close() is exposed through the\nsame missing context check.\n\nSet .might_sleep on both prototypes so the existing helper-context check\nrejects them from timer callbacks and other atomic regions. Calls from the\nsleepable main body remain valid.","publishedAt":"2026-09-25T10:24:04.190Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-21T12:54:19.435Z","severity":null,"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"79a7f8bdb159d9914b58740f3d31d602a6e4aca8","status":"affected","lessThan":"9496d857205e60241034b798d7745ff8830ba599","versionType":"git"},{"version":"79a7f8bdb159d9914b58740f3d31d602a6e4aca8","status":"affected","lessThan":"d8cfe9f71d302970ae393616960f2b3021d2b3b0","versionType":"git"},{"version":"79a7f8bdb159d9914b58740f3d31d602a6e4aca8","status":"affected","lessThan":"65f636322ac402add6046c68e9ece77b9ffd71c9","versionType":"git"},{"version":"79a7f8bdb159d9914b58740f3d31d602a6e4aca8","status":"affected","lessThan":"3408e98f06ce06ea6a58ca6c39da9c23f0029c06","versionType":"git"},{"version":"79a7f8bdb159d9914b58740f3d31d602a6e4aca8","status":"affected","lessThan":"d05524794240b52fdc3b6c1220dd05505715824d","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["kernel/bpf/syscall.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"5.14","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"5.14","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.6.160","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.6.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.12.114","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.12.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.18.57","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.18.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.2.7","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.2.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.3","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["kernel/bpf/syscall.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9496d857205e60241034b798d7745ff8830ba599","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d8cfe9f71d302970ae393616960f2b3021d2b3b0","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/65f636322ac402add6046c68e9ece77b9ffd71c9","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/3408e98f06ce06ea6a58ca6c39da9c23f0029c06","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d05524794240b52fdc3b6c1220dd05505715824d"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:13:43.249Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/98xxx/CVE-2026-98058.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-98058","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-09-25T10:24:04.190Z","dateUpdated":"2026-10-21T12:54:19.435Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-09-25T10:19:56.072Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"bpf: Mark syscall helpers as sleepable","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nbpf: Mark syscall helpers as sleepable\n\nbpf_sys_bpf() executes the bpf(2) syscall body, which can take mutexes,\nallocate with GFP_KERNEL, and wait for an RCU grace period.\nbpf_sys_close() reaches close_fd() and filp_close(), which can sleep as\nwell.\n\nBoth helpers are limited to BPF_PROG_TYPE_SYSCALL, whose main program is\nsleepable.
