{"id":"CVE-2026-97618","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"io_uring/net: don't overconsume buffers when using MSG_TRUNC","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nio_uring/net: don't overconsume buffers when using MSG_TRUNC\n\nWhen a recv/recvmsg is issued with MSG_TRUNC and the incoming packet is\nlarger than the provided buffer, the net layer returns the full length\nof the packet rather than the number of bytes actually copied into the\nbuffer. As a result, io_uring advances more of the provided buffer ring\nthan was actually filled. Use the actual filled region size to consume\nthe buffer, but still return the full size to preserve MSG_TRUNC\nsemantics.\n\nTake care with multishot, because that seems to already truncate the\nconsumption based on the available payload size.\n\nThis was reported in https://github.com/axboe/liburing/issues/1619.\n\n[axboe: fold in size_t unsigned fix]","publishedAt":"2026-09-25T10:22:25.049Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-19T09:10:21.782Z","severity":null,"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"ae98dbf43d755b4e111fcd086e53939bef3e9a1a","status":"affected","lessThan":"41d24d2fb168fa05fcaf9ec4e55478411dbbf8e1","versionType":"git"},{"version":"ae98dbf43d755b4e111fcd086e53939bef3e9a1a","status":"affected","lessThan":"927d96f91c582b319d104ecf50ec935a8dc29193","versionType":"git"},{"version":"ae98dbf43d755b4e111fcd086e53939bef3e9a1a","status":"affected","lessThan":"2e70ea75c7bb38a6dc212975f887310f14f7c043","versionType":"git"},{"version":"ae98dbf43d755b4e111fcd086e53939bef3e9a1a","status":"affected","lessThan":"6028b543884f8735e057ec9eea4908cd61cab230","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["io_uring/net.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"6.12","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"6.12","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.12.112","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.12.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.18.53","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.18.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.2.7","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.2.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.3","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["io_uring/net.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/41d24d2fb168fa05fcaf9ec4e55478411dbbf8e1","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/927d96f91c582b319d104ecf50ec935a8dc29193","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/2e70ea75c7bb38a6dc212975f887310f14f7c043","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/6028b543884f8735e057ec9eea4908cd61cab230"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:13:43.249Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/97xxx/CVE-2026-97618.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-97618","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-09-25T10:22:25.049Z","dateUpdated":"2026-10-19T09:10:21.782Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-09-24T16:01:01.159Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"io_uring/net: don't overconsume buffers when using MSG_TRUNC","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nio_uring/net: don't overconsume buffers when using MSG_TRUNC\n\nWhen a recv/recvmsg is issued with MSG_TRUNC and the incoming packet is\nlarger than the provided buffer, the net layer returns the full length\nof the packet rather than the number of bytes actually copied into the\nbuffer.
