An occupied goal at the last\nbit can therefore survive the probe and be passed to\n__ocfs2_move_extent(), which copies file data into a cluster still owned\nby another inode before the bitmap is updated.\n\nWhen the probe does find a free run, it also subtracts move_len from the\nending bit. The start of an N-bit run ending at i is i - N + 1, so the\ncurrent calculation can report the bit immediately before the free run.\n\nClear *phys_cpos before scanning and use the correct free-run start. \nCallers already treat a zero result as -ENOSPC, so failed probes no longer\ncontinue with an occupied caller-controlled goal.","publishedAt":"2026-08-15T05:53:31.901Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-16T18:44:59.778Z","severity":{"score":7.8,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","source":"Linux"},"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"3112afebf2a76e522fbaabcbb0c47aafbdc35932","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"35486b291b8fbde6c4d0b1c79e565c6260d3329d","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"19f7b04924b20b81dabbeed19d5542792ba5b6d6","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"e281d892ce5870a50fdc718cb3bfc3dd5b62c728","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"0d0c5c17b18bdbc592ac26ab4d1de7e3dbf9be1e","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"d5d5a21fb33cd9b963aea99da81e4dacd452cd95","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"4d1953d3aeb4a7f6623083e1839068ee1c157db2","versionType":"git"},{"version":"e6b5859cccfa0fec02f3c5b1069481efc7186f47","status":"affected","lessThan":"22920541c35a9f23f219038ba5874c843a7c4419","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/ocfs2/move_extents.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"3.0","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"3.0","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.10.261","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"5.10.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.212","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.1.178","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.1.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.6.145","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.6.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.12.97","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.12.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.18.40","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.18.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.1.5","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.1.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.2","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/ocfs2/move_extents.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/3112afebf2a76e522fbaabcbb0c47aafbdc35932","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/35486b291b8fbde6c4d0b1c79e565c6260d3329d","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/19f7b04924b20b81dabbeed19d5542792ba5b6d6","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e281d892ce5870a50fdc718cb3bfc3dd5b62c728","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0d0c5c17b18bdbc592ac26ab4d1de7e3dbf9be1e","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d5d5a21fb33cd9b963aea99da81e4dacd452cd95","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4d1953d3aeb4a7f6623083e1839068ee1c157db2","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/22920541c35a9f23f219038ba5874c843a7c4419"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:12:58.252Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/72xxx/CVE-2026-72164.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-72164","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-08-15T05:53:31.901Z","dateUpdated":"2026-10-16T18:44:59.778Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-08-09T03:40:39.909Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"ocfs2: avoid moving extents to occupied clusters","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nocfs2: avoid moving extents to occupied clusters\n\nFor non-auto OCFS2_IOC_MOVE_EXT operations, userspace supplies a physical\nme_goal. ocfs2_move_extent() initializes new_phys_cpos from that goal and\nexpects ocfs2_probe_alloc_group() to replace it with a free run in the\ntarget block group.\n\nThe probe currently leaves *phys_cpos unchanged if the scan reaches the\nend of the group without finding a free run.
