{"id":"CVE-2026-53319","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"blk-wbt: remove WARN_ON_ONCE from wbt_init_enable_default()","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nblk-wbt: remove WARN_ON_ONCE from wbt_init_enable_default()\n\nwbt_init_enable_default() uses WARN_ON_ONCE to check for failures from\nwbt_alloc() and wbt_init(). However, both are expected failure paths:\n\n- wbt_alloc() can return NULL under memory pressure (-ENOMEM)\n- wbt_init() can fail with -EBUSY if wbt is already registered\n\nsyzbot triggers this by injecting memory allocation failures during MTD\npartition creation via ioctl(BLKPG), causing a spurious warning.\n\nwbt_init_enable_default() is a best-effort initialization called from\nblk_register_queue() with a void return type. Failure simply means the\ndisk operates without writeback throttling, which is harmless.\n\nReplace WARN_ON_ONCE with plain if-checks, consistent with how\nwbt_set_lat() in the same file already handles these failures. Add a\npr_warn() for the wbt_init() failure to retain diagnostic information\nwithout triggering a full stack trace.","publishedAt":"2026-06-26T19:41:11.269Z","updatedAt":"2026-06-26T19:41:11.269Z","severity":null,"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"41afaeeda5099d9cd07eaa7dc6c3d20c6f1dd9e9","status":"affected","lessThan":"fd7a982657077469802594a5165bc30b9a55af70","versionType":"git"},{"version":"41afaeeda5099d9cd07eaa7dc6c3d20c6f1dd9e9","status":"affected","lessThan":"e9b004ff83067cdf96774b45aea4b239ace99a2f","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["block/blk-wbt.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"7.0","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"7.0","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.0.10","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.0.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.1","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["block/blk-wbt.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/fd7a982657077469802594a5165bc30b9a55af70","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e9b004ff83067cdf96774b45aea4b239ace99a2f"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:12:16.098Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/53xxx/CVE-2026-53319.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-53319","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-06-26T19:41:11.269Z","dateUpdated":"2026-06-26T19:41:11.269Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-06-09T07:44:35.398Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"blk-wbt: remove WARN_ON_ONCE from wbt_init_enable_default()","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nblk-wbt: remove WARN_ON_ONCE from wbt_init_enable_default()\n\nwbt_init_enable_default() uses WARN_ON_ONCE to check for failures from\nwbt_alloc() and wbt_init().
