{"id":"CVE-2026-53116","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"s390/ap: use generic driver_override infrastructure","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\ns390/ap: use generic driver_override infrastructure\n\nWhen the AP masks are updated via apmask_store() or aqmask_store(),\nap_bus_revise_bindings() is called after ap_attr_mutex has been\nreleased.\n\nThis calls __ap_revise_reserved(), which accesses the driver_override\nfield without holding any lock, racing against a concurrent\ndriver_override_store() that may free the old string, resulting in a\npotential UAF.\n\nFix this by using the driver-core driver_override infrastructure, which\nprotects all accesses with an internal spinlock.\n\nNote that unlike most other buses, the AP bus does not check\ndriver_override in its match() callback; the override is checked in\nap_device_probe() and __ap_revise_reserved() instead.\n\nAlso note that we do not enable the driver_override feature of struct\nbus_type, as AP - in contrast to most other buses - passes \"\" to\nsysfs_emit() when the driver_override pointer is NULL. Thus, printing\n\"\\n\" instead of \"(null)\\n\".\n\nAdditionally, AP has a custom counter that is modified in the\ncorresponding custom driver_override_store().","publishedAt":"2026-06-24T16:30:47.982Z","updatedAt":"2026-06-24T16:30:47.982Z","severity":null,"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"d38a87d7c0643db61e7a3bfc3ebeea2dc2568f7e","status":"affected","lessThan":"8f2eca0570438b94602da1297353eb7b10dcb6cb","versionType":"git"},{"version":"d38a87d7c0643db61e7a3bfc3ebeea2dc2568f7e","status":"affected","lessThan":"81d6f7c3a70b10ff757ee8b5f8114a190871cf1e","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/s390/crypto/ap_bus.c","drivers/s390/crypto/ap_bus.h","drivers/s390/crypto/ap_queue.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"6.19","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"6.19","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.0.10","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.0.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.1","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/s390/crypto/ap_bus.c","drivers/s390/crypto/ap_bus.h","drivers/s390/crypto/ap_queue.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/8f2eca0570438b94602da1297353eb7b10dcb6cb","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/81d6f7c3a70b10ff757ee8b5f8114a190871cf1e"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:12:16.098Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/53xxx/CVE-2026-53116.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-53116","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-06-24T16:30:47.982Z","dateUpdated":"2026-06-24T16:30:47.982Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-06-09T07:44:35.385Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"s390/ap: use generic driver_override infrastructure","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\ns390/ap: use generic driver_override infrastructure\n\nWhen the AP masks are updated via apmask_store() or aqmask_store(),\nap_bus_revise_bindings() is called after ap_attr_mutex has been\nreleased.\n\nThis calls __ap_revise_reserved(), which accesses the driver_override\nfield without holding any lock, racing against a concurrent\ndriver_override_store() that may free the old string, resulting in a\npotential UAF.\n\nFix this by using the driver-core driver_override infrastructure, which\nprotects all accesses with an internal spinlock.\n\nNote that unlike most other buses, the AP bus does not check\ndriver_override in its match() callback; the override is checked in\nap_device_probe() and __ap_revise_reserved() instead.\n\nAlso note that we do not enable the driver_override feature of struct\nbus_type, as AP - in contrast to most other buses - passes \"\" to\nsysfs_emit() when the driver_override pointer is NULL.
