{"id":"CVE-2026-53106","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"bpf: Do not allow deleting local storage in NMI","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nbpf: Do not allow deleting local storage in NMI\n\nCurrently, local storage may deadlock when deferring freeing selem or\nlocal storage through kfree_rcu(), call_rcu() or call_rcu_tasks_trace()\nin NMI or reentrant. Since deleting selem in NMI is an unlikely use\ncase, partially mitigate it by returning error when calling from\nbpf_xxx_storage_delete() helpers in NMI. Note that, it is still possible\nto deadlock through reentrant. A full mitigation requires returning\nerror when irqs_disabled() is true, which, however is too heavy-handed\nfor bpf_xxx_storage_delete().\n\nThe long-term solution requires _nolock versions of call_rcu. Another\npossible solution is to defer the free through irq_work [0], but it\nwould grow the size of selem, which is non-ideal.\n\nThe check is only needed in bpf_selem_unlink(), which is used by helpers\nand syscalls. bpf_selem_unlink_nofail() is fine as it is called during\nmap and owner tear down that never run in NMI or reentrant.\n\n[0] https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/20260205190233.912-1-alexei.starovoitov@gmail.com/","publishedAt":"2026-06-24T16:30:41.382Z","updatedAt":"2026-06-24T16:30:41.382Z","severity":null,"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"a10787e6d58c24b51e91c19c6d16c5da89fcaa4b","status":"affected","lessThan":"e84acaf936970b5b0be2c93bbf255295ba9406df","versionType":"git"},{"version":"a10787e6d58c24b51e91c19c6d16c5da89fcaa4b","status":"affected","lessThan":"350de5b8a9befaa2a68861c51f671d4f5f751ca5","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["kernel/bpf/bpf_local_storage.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"5.13","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"5.13","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.0.10","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.0.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.1","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["kernel/bpf/bpf_local_storage.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e84acaf936970b5b0be2c93bbf255295ba9406df","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/350de5b8a9befaa2a68861c51f671d4f5f751ca5"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:12:16.098Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/53xxx/CVE-2026-53106.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-53106","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-06-24T16:30:41.382Z","dateUpdated":"2026-06-24T16:30:41.382Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-06-09T07:44:35.385Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"bpf: Do not allow deleting local storage in NMI","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nbpf: Do not allow deleting local storage in NMI\n\nCurrently, local storage may deadlock when deferring freeing selem or\nlocal storage through kfree_rcu(), call_rcu() or call_rcu_tasks_trace()\nin NMI or reentrant.
