{"id":"CVE-2026-46024","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"libceph: Prevent potential null-ptr-deref in ceph_handle_auth_reply()","description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nlibceph: Prevent potential null-ptr-deref in ceph_handle_auth_reply()\n\nIf a message of type CEPH_MSG_AUTH_REPLY contains a zero value for both\nprotocol and result, this is currently not treated as an error. In case\nof ac->negotiating == true and ac->protocol > 0, this leads to setting\nac->protocol = 0 and ac->ops = NULL. Thereafter, the check for\nac->protocol != protocol returns false, and init_protocol() is not\ncalled. Subsequently, ac->ops->handle_reply() is called, which leads to\na null pointer dereference, because ac->ops is still NULL.\n\nThis patch changes the check for ac->protocol != protocol to\n!ac->protocol, as this also includes the case when the protocol was set\nto zero in the message. This causes the message to be treated as\ncontaining a bad auth protocol.","publishedAt":"2026-05-27T12:56:29.932Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-19T19:26:41.575Z","severity":{"score":7.5,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","source":"Linux"},"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"9ded62c302c0342efdb5eda3bf6e75720caad0df","versionType":"git"},{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"f101271fcf55d7eacfefd610b51ec65f46ba8118","versionType":"git"},{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"4b2738b93edad661178340239de657d876b73d3d","versionType":"git"},{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"927e4bd5692f2a4901808822981fb2c8d4456548","versionType":"git"},{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"016bc663657366d386993f63eb31072eb45a2b77","versionType":"git"},{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"8f2be7285941a33a9f72579a23b96392f83c758e","versionType":"git"},{"version":"4e7a5dcd1bbab6560fbc8ada29a840e7a20ed7bc","status":"affected","lessThan":"5199c125d25aeae8615c4fc31652cc0fe624338e","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["net/ceph/auth.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"2.6.34","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"2.6.34","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.209","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.1.175","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.1.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.6.140","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.6.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.12.86","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.12.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.18.27","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.18.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.0.4","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"7.0.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.1","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["net/ceph/auth.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9ded62c302c0342efdb5eda3bf6e75720caad0df","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/f101271fcf55d7eacfefd610b51ec65f46ba8118","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4b2738b93edad661178340239de657d876b73d3d","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/927e4bd5692f2a4901808822981fb2c8d4456548","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/016bc663657366d386993f63eb31072eb45a2b77","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/8f2be7285941a33a9f72579a23b96392f83c758e","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5199c125d25aeae8615c4fc31652cc0fe624338e"],"weaknesses":["CWE-476"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:12:07.131Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/46xxx/CVE-2026-46024.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-46024","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-05-27T12:56:29.932Z","dateUpdated":"2026-10-19T19:26:41.575Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2026-05-13T15:03:33.093Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"libceph: Prevent potential null-ptr-deref in ceph_handle_auth_reply()","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nlibceph: Prevent potential null-ptr-deref in ceph_handle_auth_reply()\n\nIf a message of type CEPH_MSG_AUTH_REPLY contains a zero value for both\nprotocol and result, this is currently not treated as an error.
