{"id":"CVE-2026-31890","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"Inspektor Gadget: Tracing Denial of Service via Event Flooding","description":"Inspektor Gadget is a set of tools and framework for data collection and system inspection on Kubernetes clusters and Linux hosts using eBPF. Prior to 0.50.1, in a situation where the ring-buffer of a gadget is – incidentally or maliciously – already full, the gadget will silently drop events. The include/gadget/buffer.h file contains definitions for the Buffer API that gadgets can use to, among the other things, transfer data from eBPF programs to userspace. For hosts running a modern enough Linux kernel (>= 5.8), this transfer mechanism is based on ring-buffers. The size of the ring-buffer for the gadgets is hard-coded to 256KB. When a gadget_reserve_buf fails because of insufficient space, the gadget silently cleans up without producing an alert. The lost count reported by the eBPF operator, when using ring-buffers – the modern choice – is hardcoded to zero. The vulnerability can be used by a malicious event source (e.g. a compromised container) to cause a Denial Of Service, forcing the system to drop events coming from other containers (or the same container). This vulnerability is fixed in 0.50.1.","publishedAt":"2026-03-12T17:35:02.129Z","updatedAt":"2026-03-13T16:25:05.936Z","severity":{"score":4.8,"label":"Medium","version":"4.0","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","source":"GitHub_M"},"assigner":"GitHub_M","products":["inspektor-gadget inspektor-gadget"],"affected":[{"vendor":"inspektor-gadget","product":"inspektor-gadget","versions":[{"version":"< 0.50.1","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/inspektor-gadget/inspektor-gadget/security/advisories/GHSA-wv52-frfv-mfh4"],"weaknesses":["CWE-223","CWE-770"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:11:40.391Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/31xxx/CVE-2026-31890.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-31890","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-03-12T17:35:02.129Z","dateUpdated":"2026-03-13T16:25:05.936Z","assignerShortName":"GitHub_M","assignerOrgId":"a0819718-46f1-4df5-94e2-005712e83aaa","dateReserved":"2026-03-09T21:59:02.687Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"Inspektor Gadget: Tracing Denial of Service via Event Flooding","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Inspektor Gadget is a set of tools and framework for data collection and system inspection on Kubernetes clusters and Linux hosts using eBPF.
