{"id":"CVE-2026-27904","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"minimatch ReDoS: nested *() extglobs generate catastrophically backtracking regular expressions","description":"minimatch is a minimal matching utility for converting glob expressions into JavaScript RegExp objects. Prior to version 10.2.3, 9.0.7, 8.0.6, 7.4.8, 6.2.2, 5.1.8, 4.2.5, and 3.1.4, nested `*()` extglobs produce regexps with nested unbounded quantifiers (e.g. `(?:(?:a|b)*)*`), which exhibit catastrophic backtracking in V8. With a 12-byte pattern `*(*(*(a|b)))` and an 18-byte non-matching input, `minimatch()` stalls for over 7 seconds. Adding a single nesting level or a few input characters pushes this to minutes. This is the most severe finding: it is triggered by the default `minimatch()` API with no special options, and the minimum viable pattern is only 12 bytes. The same issue affects `+()` extglobs equally. Versions 10.2.3, 9.0.7, 8.0.6, 7.4.8, 6.2.2, 5.1.8, 4.2.5, and 3.1.4 fix the issue.","publishedAt":"2026-02-26T01:07:42.693Z","updatedAt":"2026-02-26T19:21:39.006Z","severity":{"score":7.5,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","source":"GitHub_M"},"assigner":"GitHub_M","products":["isaacs minimatch"],"affected":[{"vendor":"isaacs","product":"minimatch","versions":[{"version":">= 10.0.0, < 10.2.3","status":"affected"},{"version":">= 9.0.0, < 9.0.7","status":"affected"},{"version":">= 8.0.0, < 8.0.6","status":"affected"},{"version":">= 7.0.0, < 7.4.8","status":"affected"},{"version":">= 6.0.0, < 6.2.2","status":"affected"},{"version":">= 5.0.0, < 5.1.8","status":"affected"},{"version":">= 4.0.0, < 4.2.5","status":"affected"},{"version":"< 3.1.4","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/isaacs/minimatch/security/advisories/GHSA-23c5-xmqv-rm74"],"weaknesses":["CWE-1333"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:11:31.369Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/27xxx/CVE-2026-27904.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-27904","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-02-26T01:07:42.693Z","dateUpdated":"2026-02-26T19:21:39.006Z","assignerShortName":"GitHub_M","assignerOrgId":"a0819718-46f1-4df5-94e2-005712e83aaa","dateReserved":"2026-02-24T15:19:29.718Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"minimatch ReDoS: nested *() extglobs generate catastrophically backtracking regular expressions","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"minimatch is a minimal matching utility for converting glob expressions into JavaScript RegExp objects.
