{"id":"CVE-2026-23741","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"ast_coredumper running as root sources ast_debug_tools.conf from /etc/asterisk; potentially leading to privilege escalation","description":"Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange and telephony toolkit. Prior to versions 20.7-cert9, 20.18.2, 21.12.1, 22.8.2, and 23.2.2, the asterisk/contrib/scripts/ast_coredumper runs as root, as noted by the NOTES tag on line 689 of the ast_coredumper file. The script will source the contents of /etc/asterisk/ast_debug_tools.conf, which resides in a folder that is writeable by the asterisk user:group. Due to the /etc/asterisk/ast_debug_tools.conf file following bash semantics and it being loaded; an attacker with write permissions may add or modify the file such that when the root ast_coredumper is run; it would source and thereby execute arbitrary bash code found in the /etc/asterisk/ast_debug_tools.conf. This issue has been patched in versions 20.7-cert9, 20.18.2, 21.12.1, 22.8.2, and 23.2.2.","publishedAt":"2026-02-06T16:47:19.611Z","updatedAt":"2026-02-06T17:26:22.216Z","severity":{"score":0,"label":"None","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:N","source":"GitHub_M"},"assigner":"GitHub_M","products":["asterisk asterisk"],"affected":[{"vendor":"asterisk","product":"asterisk","versions":[{"version":"< 23.2.2","status":"affected"},{"version":"< 22.8.2","status":"affected"},{"version":"< 21.12.1","status":"affected"},{"version":"< 20.18.2","status":"affected"},{"version":"< 20.7-cert9","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/asterisk/asterisk/security/advisories/GHSA-rvch-3jmx-3jf3"],"weaknesses":["CWE-427"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:11:21.040Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2026/23xxx/CVE-2026-23741.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2026-23741","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2026-02-06T16:47:19.611Z","dateUpdated":"2026-02-06T17:26:22.216Z","assignerShortName":"GitHub_M","assignerOrgId":"a0819718-46f1-4df5-94e2-005712e83aaa","dateReserved":"2026-01-15T15:45:01.958Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"ast_coredumper running as root sources ast_debug_tools.conf from /etc/asterisk; potentially leading to privilege escalation","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange and telephony toolkit.
