A remote CAN/J1939 peer can send the duplicate RTS/BAM sequence to a Linux node using a bound J1939 socket, so the attacker does not need local execution on the target.\nAC:L - The trigger is a controlled protocol sequence involving a second RTS/BAM for an active receiver session; the attacker controls the packet timing and contents. No hard-to-win race or condition outside attacker influence is required.\nPR:N - Received CAN/J1939 frames enter the vulnerable receive path without authentication or credential checks. In the highest reasonable deployment, the attacker is an unauthenticated peer on the J1939/CAN network.\nUI:N - No victim interaction is required once the target is running the J1939 stack with a bound socket. The attacker only needs to transmit the crafted J1939 frames.\nS:U - The bug affects kernel CAN/J1939 session and netdevice lifetime management within the same kernel security authority. It does not cross a VM, sandbox, IOMMU, or other separate security boundary.\nC:N - The bug is a reference-count leak caused by failing to deactivate a receiver session after cancelling its timer. The investigation did not identify memory disclosure, arbitrary read, or use-after-free behavior.\nI:N - The leaked references pin session/private/netdevice objects but do not provide attacker-controlled data modification or a write primitive. There is no evidence of control-flow corruption or persistent data tampering.\nA:H - The leaked J1939 session/private references pin the CAN net_device and can make unregister_netdevice wait indefinitely with a nonzero usage count. This is a persistent denial of service against network device or namespace teardown and can be retriggered."}]}],"providerMetadata":{"shortName":"Linux","orgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateUpdated":"2026-08-05T12:20:01.212Z"},"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"5.10.249"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"5.15.199"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"6.1.162"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"6.6.122"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"6.12.67"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"6.18.7"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.4","versionEndExcluding":"6.19"}]}]}],"x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}},"adp":[{"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment","metrics":[{"other":{"type":"ssvc","content":{"id":"CVE-2026-22997","role":"CISA Coordinator","options":[{"Exploitation":"none"},{"Automatable":"yes"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"version":"2.0.3","timestamp":"2026-06-16T20:36:25.922251Z"}}}],"problemTypes":[{"descriptions":[{"cweId":"CWE-772","lang":"en","type":"CWE","description":"CWE-772 Missing Release of Resource after Effective Lifetime"}]}],"providerMetadata":{"shortName":"CISA-ADP","orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","dateUpdated":"2026-10-19T18:25:26.725Z"}}]}}}
