{"id":"CVE-2025-61661","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"Grub2: grub2: out-of-bounds write via malicious usb device","description":"A vulnerability has been identified in the GRUB (Grand Unified Bootloader) component. This flaw occurs because the bootloader mishandles string conversion when reading information from a USB device, allowing an attacker to exploit inconsistent length values. A local attacker can connect a maliciously configured USB device during the boot sequence to trigger this issue. A successful exploitation may lead GRUB to crash, leading to a Denial of Service. Data corruption may be also possible, although given the complexity of the exploit the impact is most likely limited.","publishedAt":"2025-11-18T18:20:42.151Z","updatedAt":"2026-09-01T11:53:52.929Z","severity":{"score":4.8,"label":"Medium","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:P/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H","source":"redhat"},"assigner":"redhat","products":["GNU grub2","Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10","Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7","Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8","Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9","Red Hat Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4"],"affected":[{"vendor":"GNU","product":"grub2","packageName":"grub2","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"0","status":"affected","lessThanOrEqual":"2.14","versionType":"semver"}],"collectionURL":"https://git.savannah.gnu.org/git/grub.git"},{"vendor":"Red Hat","product":"Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10","packageName":"grub2","defaultStatus":"affected","collectionURL":"https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/package-browser/","cpes":["cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:10"]},{"vendor":"Red Hat","product":"Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7","packageName":"grub2","defaultStatus":"affected","collectionURL":"https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/package-browser/","cpes":["cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:7"]},{"vendor":"Red Hat","product":"Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8","packageName":"grub2","defaultStatus":"affected","collectionURL":"https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/package-browser/","cpes":["cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:8"]},{"vendor":"Red Hat","product":"Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9","packageName":"grub2","defaultStatus":"affected","collectionURL":"https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/package-browser/","cpes":["cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:9"]},{"vendor":"Red Hat","product":"Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4","packageName":"openshift/ose-rhel-coreos-8","defaultStatus":"affected","collectionURL":"https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/package-browser/","cpes":["cpe:/a:redhat:openshift:4"]},{"vendor":"Red Hat","product":"Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4","packageName":"openshift/ose-rhel-coreos-9","defaultStatus":"affected","collectionURL":"https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/package-browser/","cpes":["cpe:/a:redhat:openshift:4"]}],"references":["https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2025-61661","https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2413827","http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2025/11/18/8"],"weaknesses":["CWE-131"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:09:48.677Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2025/61xxx/CVE-2025-61661.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2025-61661","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2025-11-18T18:20:42.151Z","dateUpdated":"2026-09-01T11:53:52.929Z","assignerShortName":"redhat","assignerOrgId":"53f830b8-0a3f-465b-8143-3b8a9948e749","dateReserved":"2025-09-29T20:18:48.974Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"Grub2: grub2: out-of-bounds write via malicious usb device","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"A vulnerability has been identified in the GRUB (Grand Unified Bootloader) component.
