{"id":"CVE-2025-24031","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"PAM-PKCS#11 vulnerable to segmentation fault on ctrl-c/ctrl-d when asked for PIN","description":"PAM-PKCS#11 is a Linux-PAM login module that allows a X.509 certificate based user login. In versions 0.6.12 and prior, the pam_pkcs11 module segfaults when a user presses ctrl-c/ctrl-d when they are asked for a PIN. When a user enters no PIN at all, `pam_get_pwd` will never initialize the password buffer pointer and as such `cleanse` will try to dereference an uninitialized pointer. On my system this pointer happens to have the value 3 most of the time when running sudo and as such it will segfault. The most likely impact to a system affected by this issue is an availability impact due to a daemon that uses PAM crashing. As of time of publication, a patch for the issue is unavailable.","publishedAt":"2025-02-10T15:38:39.876Z","updatedAt":"2025-02-10T15:50:52.981Z","severity":{"score":5.1,"label":"Medium","version":"4.0","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:L","source":"GitHub_M"},"assigner":"GitHub_M","products":["OpenSC pam_pkcs11"],"affected":[{"vendor":"OpenSC","product":"pam_pkcs11","versions":[{"version":"<= 0.6.12","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/OpenSC/pam_pkcs11/security/advisories/GHSA-wvr3-c9x3-9mff","https://github.com/OpenSC/pam_pkcs11/blob/bb2e3f3a95e44fdf44b0d5a4b377db3179021380/src/pam_pkcs11/pam_pkcs11.c#L211","https://github.com/OpenSC/pam_pkcs11/blob/bb2e3f3a95e44fdf44b0d5a4b377db3179021380/src/pam_pkcs11/pam_pkcs11.c#L797"],"weaknesses":["CWE-476"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:08:47.682Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2025/24xxx/CVE-2025-24031.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2025-24031","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2025-02-10T15:38:39.876Z","dateUpdated":"2025-02-10T15:50:52.981Z","assignerShortName":"GitHub_M","assignerOrgId":"a0819718-46f1-4df5-94e2-005712e83aaa","dateReserved":"2025-01-16T17:31:06.460Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"PAM-PKCS#11 vulnerable to segmentation fault on ctrl-c/ctrl-d when asked for PIN","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"PAM-PKCS#11 is a Linux-PAM login module that allows a X.509 certificate based user login.
