This is due to verification only being performed at the beginning of the routine allowing the userspace to change page permissions half way through the routine.  A valid workaround is a rule to detect unauthorized loading of winpmem outside incident response operations.","publishedAt":"2024-12-16T14:49:07.294Z","updatedAt":"2025-09-05T08:40:18.985Z","severity":{"score":7.3,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:H","source":"rapid7"},"assigner":"rapid7","products":["Velocidex WinPmem"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Velocidex","product":"WinPmem","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"<= 4.1","status":"affected","versionType":"semver"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/Velocidex/WinPmem/releases/tag/v4.1.dev1"],"weaknesses":["CWE-367"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:06:50.777Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2024/10xxx/CVE-2024-10972.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2024-10972","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2024-12-16T14:49:07.294Z","dateUpdated":"2025-09-05T08:40:18.985Z","assignerShortName":"rapid7","assignerOrgId":"9974b330-7714-4307-a722-5648477acda7","dateReserved":"2024-11-07T16:33:46.948Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"WinPmem Improper Input Validation vulnerability","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Velocidex WinPmem versions 4.1 and below suffer from an Improper Input Validation vulnerability whereby an attacker with admin access can trigger a BSOD with a parallel thread changing the memory’s access right under the control of the user-mode application.
