{"id":"CVE-2023-29011","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"Git for Windows's config file of `connect.exe` is susceptible to malicious placing","description":"Git for Windows, the Windows port of Git, ships with an executable called `connect.exe`, which implements a SOCKS5 proxy that can be used to connect e.g. to SSH servers via proxies when certain ports are blocked for outgoing connections. The location of `connect.exe`'s config file is hard-coded as `/etc/connectrc` which will typically be interpreted as `C:\\etc\\connectrc`. Since `C:\\etc` can be created by any authenticated user, this makes `connect.exe` susceptible to malicious files being placed there by other users on the same multi-user machine. The problem has been patched in Git for Windows v2.40.1. As a workaround, create the folder `etc` on all drives where Git commands are run, and remove read/write access from those folders. Alternatively, watch out for malicious `<drive>:\\etc\\connectrc` files on multi-user machines.","publishedAt":"2023-04-25T20:40:30.247Z","updatedAt":"2025-02-03T18:07:25.939Z","severity":{"score":7.6,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","source":"GitHub_M"},"assigner":"GitHub_M","products":["git-for-windows git"],"affected":[{"vendor":"git-for-windows","product":"git","versions":[{"version":"< 2.40.1","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/security/advisories/GHSA-g4fv-xjqw-q7jm","https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/releases/tag/v2.40.1.windows.1"],"weaknesses":["CWE-427"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:05:52.290Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2023/29xxx/CVE-2023-29011.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2023-29011","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2023-04-25T20:40:30.247Z","dateUpdated":"2025-02-03T18:07:25.939Z","assignerShortName":"GitHub_M","assignerOrgId":"a0819718-46f1-4df5-94e2-005712e83aaa","dateReserved":"2023-03-29T17:39:16.143Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"Git for Windows's config file of `connect.exe` is susceptible to malicious placing","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Git for Windows, the Windows port of Git, ships with an executable called `connect.exe`, which implements a SOCKS5 proxy that can be used to connect e.g. to SSH servers via proxies when certain ports are blocked for outgoing connections.
