This is excessive, instead we can simply\nabort the transaction and return the error to the caller. In fact most\ncallers of btrfs_drop_extents(), directly or indirectly, already abort\nthe transaction if btrfs_drop_extents() returns any error.\n\nAlso, we already have error paths at btrfs_drop_extents() that may return\n-ENOMEM and in those cases we abort the transaction, like for example\nanything that changes the b+tree may return -ENOMEM due to a failure to\nallocate a new extent buffer when COWing an existing extent buffer, such\nas a call to btrfs_duplicate_item() for example.\n\nSo replace the BUG_ON() calls with proper logic to abort the transaction\nand return the error.","publishedAt":"2025-09-15T14:45:49.338Z","updatedAt":"2026-05-11T19:16:30.736Z","severity":null,"assigner":"Linux","products":["Linux Linux"],"affected":[{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","versions":[{"version":"39279cc3d2704cfbf9c35dcb5bdd392159ae4625","status":"affected","lessThan":"50f993da945074b2a069da099a0331b23a0c89a0","versionType":"git"},{"version":"39279cc3d2704cfbf9c35dcb5bdd392159ae4625","status":"affected","lessThan":"7fbcb635c8fc927d139f3302babcf1b42c09265c","versionType":"git"},{"version":"39279cc3d2704cfbf9c35dcb5bdd392159ae4625","status":"affected","lessThan":"1baf3370e2dc5e6bd1368348736189457dab2a27","versionType":"git"},{"version":"39279cc3d2704cfbf9c35dcb5bdd392159ae4625","status":"affected","lessThan":"162d053e15fe985f754ef495a96eb3db970c43ed","versionType":"git"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/btrfs/file.c"]},{"vendor":"Linux","product":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","versions":[{"version":"2.6.29","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","status":"unaffected","lessThan":"2.6.29","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.86","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.0.16","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.0.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.1.2","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"6.1.*","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.2","status":"unaffected","lessThanOrEqual":"*","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}],"repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/btrfs/file.c"]}],"references":["https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/50f993da945074b2a069da099a0331b23a0c89a0","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/7fbcb635c8fc927d139f3302babcf1b42c09265c","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1baf3370e2dc5e6bd1368348736189457dab2a27","https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/162d053e15fe985f754ef495a96eb3db970c43ed"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T20:05:26.763Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2022/50xxx/CVE-2022-50293.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2022-50293","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2025-09-15T14:45:49.338Z","dateUpdated":"2026-05-11T19:16:30.736Z","assignerShortName":"Linux","assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","dateReserved":"2025-09-15T14:18:36.811Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"btrfs: do not BUG_ON() on ENOMEM when dropping extent items for a range","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nbtrfs: do not BUG_ON() on ENOMEM when dropping extent items for a range\n\nIf we get -ENOMEM while dropping file extent items in a given range, at\nbtrfs_drop_extents(), due to failure to allocate memory when attempting to\nincrement the reference count for an extent or drop the reference count,\nwe handle it with a BUG_ON().
