{"id":"CVE-2022-35961","state":"PUBLISHED","title":"ECDSA signature malleability in OpenZeppelin Contracts","description":"OpenZeppelin Contracts is a library for secure smart contract development. The functions `ECDSA.recover` and `ECDSA.tryRecover` are vulnerable to a kind of signature malleability due to accepting EIP-2098 compact signatures in addition to the traditional 65 byte signature format. This is only an issue for the functions that take a single `bytes` argument, and not the functions that take `r, v, s` or `r, vs` as separate arguments. The potentially affected contracts are those that implement signature reuse or replay protection by marking the signature itself as used rather than the signed message or a nonce included in it. A user may take a signature that has already been submitted, submit it again in a different form, and bypass this protection. The issue has been patched in 4.7.3.","publishedAt":"2022-08-14T00:05:09.000Z","updatedAt":"2025-04-23T17:50:36.577Z","severity":{"score":7.9,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:L","source":"GitHub_M"},"assigner":"GitHub_M","products":["OpenZeppelin openzeppelin-contracts"],"affected":[{"vendor":"OpenZeppelin","product":"openzeppelin-contracts","versions":[{"version":">= 4.1.0, < 4.7.3","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://github.com/OpenZeppelin/openzeppelin-contracts/security/advisories/GHSA-4h98-2769-gh6h","https://github.com/OpenZeppelin/openzeppelin-contracts/pull/3610","https://github.com/OpenZeppelin/openzeppelin-contracts/releases/tag/v4.7.3"],"weaknesses":["CWE-354"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T19:50:17.761Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2022/35xxx/CVE-2022-35961.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2022-35961","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2022-08-14T00:05:09.000Z","dateUpdated":"2025-04-23T17:50:36.577Z","assignerShortName":"GitHub_M","assignerOrgId":"a0819718-46f1-4df5-94e2-005712e83aaa","dateReserved":"2022-07-15T00:00:00.000Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"title":"ECDSA signature malleability in OpenZeppelin Contracts","descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"OpenZeppelin Contracts is a library for secure smart contract development.
