A MiTM attacker having access to victim's traffic at the TCP/IP layer can redirect traffic from one subdomain to another, resulting in a valid TLS session. This breaks the authentication of TLS and cross-protocol attacks may be possible where the behavior of one protocol service may compromise the other at the application layer.","publishedAt":"2022-03-23T00:00:00.000Z","updatedAt":"2024-08-03T17:01:07.459Z","severity":null,"assigner":"redhat","products":["n/a ALPACA"],"affected":[{"vendor":"n/a","product":"ALPACA","versions":[{"version":"vsftpd 3.0.4, nginx 1.21.0, sendmail 8.17","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1975623","https://alpaca-attack.com/","https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2022/11/msg00031.html"],"weaknesses":["CWE-295"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T19:48:55.807Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2021/3xxx/CVE-2021-3618.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2021-3618","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2022-03-23T00:00:00.000Z","dateUpdated":"2024-08-03T17:01:07.459Z","assignerShortName":"redhat","assignerOrgId":"53f830b8-0a3f-465b-8143-3b8a9948e749","dateReserved":"2021-06-24T00:00:00.000Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"ALPACA is an application layer protocol content confusion attack, exploiting TLS servers implementing different protocols but using compatible certificates, such as multi-domain or wildcard certificates.
