Since valid ether type and IP protocol numbers do not overlap, Snort++ stores all protocol decoders in a single array. That makes it possible to craft packets that have IP protocol numbers in the ether type field which will confuse the Snort++ decoder. For example, an eth:llc:snap:icmp6 packet will cause a crash because there is no ip6 header with which to calculate the icmp6 checksum. Affected decoders include gre, llc, trans_bridge, ciscometadata, linux_sll, and token_ring. The fix adds a check in the packet manager to validate the ether type before indexing the decoder array. An out of range ether type will raise 116:473.","publishedAt":"2017-05-16T17:00:00.000Z","updatedAt":"2024-08-05T15:33:20.453Z","severity":null,"assigner":"cisco","products":["n/a Snort 3.0 All versions prior to build 233."],"affected":[{"vendor":"n/a","product":"Snort 3.0 All versions prior to build 233.","versions":[{"version":"Snort 3.0 All versions prior to build 233.","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["http://www.securitytracker.com/id/1038483","http://blog.snort.org/2017/05/snort-vulnerabilities-found.html"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T19:43:52.125Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2017/6xxx/CVE-2017-6657.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2017-6657","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2017-05-16T17:00:00.000Z","dateUpdated":"2024-08-05T15:33:20.453Z","assignerShortName":"cisco","assignerOrgId":"d1c1063e-7a18-46af-9102-31f8928bc633","dateReserved":"2017-03-09T00:00:00.000Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Cisco Sourcefire Snort 3.0 before build 233 mishandles Ether Type Validation.
