This vulnerability leads to a stack-based buffer overflow condition in the internal Unicode string manipulation module. It is triggered by an invalid PDF file, where a crafted Unicode string causes an out of bounds memory access of a stack allocated buffer, due to improper checks when manipulating an offset of a pointer to the buffer. Attackers can exploit the vulnerability and achieve arbitrary code execution if they can effectively control the accessible memory.","publishedAt":"2017-12-09T06:00:00.000Z","updatedAt":"2025-05-06T14:55:32.418Z","severity":{"score":8.8,"label":"High","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","source":"CISA-ADP"},"assigner":"adobe","products":["n/a Adobe Acrobat Reader 2017.012.20098 and earlier versions, 2017.011.30066 and earlier versions, 2015.006.30355 and earlier versions, 11.0.22 and earlier versions"],"affected":[{"vendor":"n/a","product":"Adobe Acrobat Reader 2017.012.20098 and earlier versions, 2017.011.30066 and earlier versions, 2015.006.30355 and earlier versions, 11.0.22 and earlier versions","versions":[{"version":"Adobe Acrobat Reader 2017.012.20098 and earlier versions, 2017.011.30066 and earlier versions, 2015.006.30355 and earlier versions, 11.0.22 and earlier versions","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["http://www.securitytracker.com/id/1039791","https://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/acrobat/apsb17-36.html","http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/101816"],"weaknesses":["CWE-119"],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T19:43:25.795Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2017/16xxx/CVE-2017-16368.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2017-16368","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2017-12-09T06:00:00.000Z","dateUpdated":"2025-05-06T14:55:32.418Z","assignerShortName":"adobe","assignerOrgId":"078d4453-3bcd-4900-85e6-15281da43538","dateReserved":"2017-11-01T00:00:00.000Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"An issue was discovered in Adobe Acrobat and Reader: 2017.012.20098 and earlier versions, 2017.011.30066 and earlier versions, 2015.006.30355 and earlier versions, and 11.0.22 and earlier versions.
