A possible timing attack could be carried out by modifying a PKCS#12 file that has an integrity MAC for which the password is not known. An attacker could then feed the modified PKCS#12 file to the toolkit and guess the current MAC one byte at a time. This is possible because Crypto-J uses a non-constant-time method to compare the stored MAC with the calculated MAC. This vulnerability is similar to the issue described in CVE-2015-2601.","publishedAt":"2017-02-03T07:24:00.000Z","updatedAt":"2024-08-06T02:13:21.795Z","severity":null,"assigner":"dell","products":["n/a RSA BSAFE Crypto-J RSA BSAFE Crypto-J versions prior to 6.2.2"],"affected":[{"vendor":"n/a","product":"RSA BSAFE Crypto-J RSA BSAFE Crypto-J versions prior to 6.2.2","versions":[{"version":"RSA BSAFE Crypto-J RSA BSAFE Crypto-J versions prior to 6.2.2","status":"affected"}]}],"references":["http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/540066/30/0/threaded","http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/95831","http://www.securitytracker.com/id/1037732"],"weaknesses":[],"ingestedAt":"2026-10-29T19:42:55.629Z","source":{"repository":"CVEProject/cvelistV5","path":"cves/2016/8xxx/CVE-2016-8217.json","commit":"556c9d3a8cd17e218bb8e452ba7cd619a384ff47"},"raw":{"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.1","cveMetadata":{"cveId":"CVE-2016-8217","state":"PUBLISHED","datePublished":"2017-02-03T07:24:00.000Z","dateUpdated":"2024-08-06T02:13:21.795Z","assignerShortName":"dell","assignerOrgId":"c550e75a-17ff-4988-97f0-544cde3820fe","dateReserved":"2016-09-13T00:00:00.000Z"},"containers":{"cna":{"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"EMC RSA BSAFE Crypto-J versions prior to 6.2.2 has a PKCS#12 Timing Attack Vulnerability.
